Because the top shelf can go all the way to the ceiling, you are utilizing space that would normally be out of reach.

Criss-crossed boards about four inches deep went from the floor to about six feet high. This provided a lot of space for ties, belts and rolled socks to be stored while utilizing a very small amount of what used to be wasted space. Wire in a small spotlight for the wall and you’ve got yourself a high-end closet feature that looks creative and utilizes space wisely.
If you have the space, you can add in a small cabinet or shelving system. Drawers and cabinet doors are useful for keeping things hidden from sight, making your closet appear nice and neat.
