Cedar Lined Closet DIY
Cedar lined closets are all the rage right now. You’ll find them in high end hotels, resorts, celebrity homes, luxurious bed and breakfasts, and upscale offices. Here we will discuss the benefits of having a cedar lined closet, as well as how you can easily and inexpensively build one for yourself, without removing installed shelving!
Cedar is an aromatic wood that has many beneficial properties for closets. It is deodorizing, absorbing shoe odors and keeping them from invading your clothing. It makes clothes smell light and clean. Cedar linings and cedar hangers absorb moisture from the air, preventing mildew and mold from forming in damp climates or in closets that are close to bathrooms where they might be exposed to steam.
Cedar linings and cedar hangers also repel all sorts of insects, including but not limited to roaches, silverfish and moths. Moths are most attracted to wool clothing, but not because it’s wool. We don’t need to wash wool clothing very often, it only needs to be periodically brushed. Therefore, the oils from our skin remain on the clothing, and this is what the moths are attracted to. Any clothing that is hung without being washed can attract moths to it.
Moths lay their eggs in the soiled areas so that the larvae will have plenty to eat when they hatch. This is how they cause damage to clothes. Larvae eat away at the fabric making holes, thin spots, and essentially destroying your wardrobe. Larvae are easily killed by brushing clothing with a fabric brush or gently running a damp cloth over the surface of the article.
If you want to repel moths, other insects, odors and moisture, you should line your closet with cedar or invest a little in cedar hangers. To line your closet yourself, measure and figure how many cedar planks you will need. Cedar planks are inexpensive and easy to install.
Decide if you want the planks to run horizontally, vertically, or even diagonally. Using a mitre saw to cut will ensure that your angles are perfect. Start at the bottom of the closet and go up. You can use finishing nails or wood glue to attach the planks. Press the first board firmly against the floor when you install it so that it will act as a baseboard. If you are using glue and have carpeted floors, you might need to put finishing nails in the bottom boards to hold them tight against the carpet.
When your closet is done, it will be so beautiful and beneficial. Finishing touches like high end hangers, such as strong metal hangers or high quality cedar hangers will make your closet gorgeous. If the aromatic scent of the cedar starts to fade after a few years, simply rub it gently with fine-grit sandpaper. This will restore the aroma and the beneficial properties of your cedar lined closet.
