Every Hanger Has a Purpose

Posted on | May 7, 2012 | No Comments

Hangers are meticulously designed to meet specific needs. Of course, there are many different levels of hanger quality, from flimsy disposable shipping hangers up to sturdy wooden hangers. Choosing the right ones for your specific needs is the key to getting your closet organized while protecting the investment that you’ve made in your wardrobe.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get the right hangers for the job. Most are designed for a specific item of clothing. If you use them for their specific purpose, then you won’t be putting much wear and tear on it.

Here is an experiment that you can try. Divide your clothing into shirts, pants, skirts, coats, dresses and suits. Now, attempt to divide each of those into even smaller categories; Short sleeved thin shirts, t-shirts, button down short sleeves, long sleeved t-shirts, blouses, etc. Now you are starting to see how each type of garment could use a different clothes hanger.

In general, button down shirts, suits, dresses and coats are a little more delicate than, say, t-shirts. These types of garments, especially dry clean only garments, can have molded shoulders, sizing, glues, special fabrics, and padding that needs special support on the hanger to maintain their shape. Curved hangers with supportive shoulders are best for these types of garments. You can also measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back to see how long of a hanger you will need. Virtually every size is available.

T-shirts and other durable types of clothing can go on slim hangers that fit very closely together. Velvet hangers offer a superb grip that will keep clothes from slipping or bunching up together. You wouldn’t believe how much space these hangers can save you over plastic tubular hangers. Plus, they’re gentle on delicate fabrics and hold spaghetti straps and other slippery materials in place.

Some items you may want to cascade. I have several pairs of exercise pants that are almost identical. I chose to hang all of these on one multi-pants hanger so that I can quickly and easily find them when I’m in a hurry to get to the gym. I also cascade skirts and pair tops and bottoms on specialty clothes hangers.

You can also organize accessories, like scarves, hats, ties, and even swimwear on special accessory hangers. This helps you to protect these items while making them easy to find and put away. Consider what a difference the right hangers can make in your closet.
